On February 19, 1999 Austria Post issued a 8 ATS definitive stamp in the series of Austria tales and legends. This time, the stamp tell us the story of a dark maiden:
Rising up out of the forest just across from the Hardegg Castle is a gigantic boulder - it is called Regina’s Boulder. There was once a unruly young count who lived in the castle at Hardegg. The count caroused around with his companions and lead an otherwise irreverent life. He seduced many youthful, pretty maidens only to cast them aside after a short time. One day the count sought to beckon the beautiful Regina to his castle, yet the maiden resisted his false professions of love. The count had her kidnapped by his servants and brought to his castle. Here too she resisted his advances and the count ordered his thugs to enclose Regina alive within the rock face situated across from the castle. As the count proceeded to inspect his grim work, he fell with this white steed from the rock. The corpse of the count and that of his horse were never found. Indeed as his punishment the count must have relived his fatal fall over and over again until just recently. From then on citizens knew him as ghost rider and named the boulder Regina’s Boulder. The dead maiden sought her grave ever since and hovered over the cemetery at midnight. The Dark Maiden continued to frighten citizens of Hardegg until one night a forest ranger, while making his way through the cemetery, saw the woman’s silhouette, pulled his firearm from his shoulder, and began firing repeatedly. Since that time no one has seen the Dark Maiden of Hardegg. (Taken from: Sagen und Legenden aus Hardegg).
