Billions of stamps featuring the stars and stripes of the American flag flying over a skyscraper-filled cityscape was unfurled on February 25, 1999 when the 33-cent City Flag stamp was officially dedicated in Orlando, Fla.
As a boy growing up in Japan, the artist who created the stamp, Hiro Kimura, imagined Old Glory and the skyscrapers of a city reaching into a cloudless sky. "This is the picture that formed in my mind when I thought about the United States," he said.
The stamp, which pays for the first ounce of a First-Class letter or package, was go on sale at post offices nationwide February 26.
