1999.04.20    United Kingdom New Machin Definitives

On April 20, Royal Mail  issued 4 brand new Machins: 7p light gray, 38p ultramarine, 44p stone, and 64p sea green. The 7p pays the new makeup rate between the first class rate (still 26p) and the new second class rate (19p, down 1p). The 38p pays the new world-wide postcard rate, up 1p. The 44p pays the world-wide airmail rate up to 10g, up from 43p, and the 64p pays the world-wide airmail rate up to 20g, up from 63p. The Machins were the result of a rate change that takes effect on April 26.

There also had  new versions of the 19p and 20p Machins. The 19p olive green  now have the enhanced EME portrait, while the 20p light green  switchs from one phosphor band to two. Royal Mail does not consider these to be new issues.

Since the first class rate remains at 26p, the existing Machin will continue to serve for that purpose.
