A new one of Austria Tales and Legends standard issue series is released on August 27, the stamp valued 20ATS, depicting Saint Notburga.
Notburga is the patron saint of all life small and inconspicuous. She is great in the eyes of God because brotherly love was just as important to her as the love of God. Notburga was cherished for her simple acts of love, devotion to God, and brotherly love. Since she was not from nobility, not an abbess, nor a theologian nor academic, she became Tyrol's provincial saint. Notburga lived in the days when Rudolf of Habsburg occupied the German throne and Meinhard II ruled County Tirol. In those days there existed a striking contrast between rich and poor. Indeed the church welcomed the sick, poor, and helpless with Francis of Assisi, Elisabeth of Thuringia and the Order of the Begins. Saint Notburga also had a heart for the poor. A combination of the Old High German "Not" (crisis) and "Burga" (protection, shelter), her name means offering sanctuary in times of need.
The foreground of the stamp shows a beggar to whom Notburga opens her
heart. In the background stands the church of Eben where the saint often
prayed and where she even found her final resting place. Prayer and labor,
the "Ora-et-labora" of Saint Benedict and serving God and others enhance
our lives and society. The stamp seeks to bring this pertinent message
to our awareness.
