2001.02.22    USA Washington, Eagle, Bison Definitive Stamps

Three new designs bearing Washington, Eagle and Bison revealed in various self-adhesive formats on Feb. 22 to meet with the public need for new postage stamps.

The 20c George Washington stamps, featuring a right profile view of sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon's bust of this famous U.S. president, are being offered in three formats: flat panes of 10, and two folded vending booklets of 10. The 20c postage is exactly satisfy the rate for a domestic postcard. The new stamps seems to share duties with remaining 20c self-stick Ring-necked Pheasant stamps in rolls of 100 coil stamps and in panes of 10.

The rate change of Jan. 7 left the rate for a 2-ounce domestic letter unchanged at 55c. It seemed that there should be new ones to help the existing stocks of the 55c Justin Morrill stamp, first seen July 1999, to meet with the new needs. The 55c eagle appears. The eagle stamp pictures a stylized image of a stark, angular eagle in Art Deco type, an architectural style had its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s and is typified by familiar structures such as the Chrysler Building in New York City.

The 21c Bison stamp will satify the immediately need for additional ounce rate in first-class mail. The striking design portrays a left-facing profile of a stylized bison silhouetted against beams of light emanating from a low-hanging sun. The stamp is issued in coil stamps in rolls of 100 and in panes of 20.
