Lighting Bison

The 21c Bison stamp, first appear Feb. 22, 2001, satifies the
need for additional ounce rate in first-class mail. The striking design
portrays a left-facing profile of a stylized bison silhouetted against
beams of light emanating from a low-hanging sun. The stamp is issued in
coil stamps in rolls of 100 and in panes of 20.
With the postage hike on 1st July 2001, the additional ounce rate rised
from 21c to 23 cents, while the postcard rate increased from 20c to 21c,
the 21c stamps got out of the uses they originally supposed to, but also
found a new place. In meet with the new needs, USPS re-issued the design
on September 20, 2001 in three new formats: water activated pane of 100,
self-adhesive pane of 10 and self-adhesive booklet pane of 10. The re-issues
were printed in 6 colors with microprinting "USPS", instead of 4 colors
used for the original printing.
