Drivers
What Do Drivers Do?
Whenever we add new hardware to a computer, such as a CD-ROM drive or a NIC, we need to load a new driver program. This device driver is normaly supplied, on disk, in the same package as the device itself. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from the Internet.
The job of the driver is to teach the computer how to use its new hardware.
NIC Drivers
When you buy a network adapter, you will also get a disk containing drivers for that card. These drivers form part of the Data Link Layer of the OSI model.
Note:
Makers of network interface cards also give copies of their drivers to Novell and Microsoft. They are then included on the CD-ROM for the operating system.
Installing Drivers
Drivers for network adapters are installed for Windows NT using the Network Settings section of Control Panel.
