8:40 to 9:20 AM Keynote Speech Dr. George Calhoun, CEO, Illinois Superconductor "3G Wireless Systems: Post-Shannon Architectures" Dr. Calhoun joined ISC in 1999, with more than 20 years in high-tech wireless systems development. Recognized as a leading wireless technologist, he was the co-founder of two public wireless technology companies. He has served as chairman of a large Israeli-based engineering subsidiary; head of product development for mobile/portable data-centric applications for a mobile service provider; architect of international technical joint ventures in Korea, Germany and Japan; and director of a UK-based mobile SMRS operator. Dr. Calhoun is the author of two best-selling technical books on digital wireless technology and the forthcoming "3rd Generation Wireless Systems: Vol. 1 - Post-Shannon Architectures." He also is a founding partner of DaVinci Solutions LLC, a consulting firm specializing in wireless telecommunications. Tucker Professor of Engineering, Virginia Tech, Chairman & CEO of Wireless Valley Communications "Rapid InBuilding Design Without Wearing a Space Suit" Dr. Rappaport received his BSEE, MSEE, and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Since 1988, he has been on the faculty of the Bradley Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he is the James S. Tucker Professor of Engineering. In 1990, he founded the Mobile & Portable Radio Research Group, a university research and teaching center dedicated to the wireless communications field. In 1989, he founded TSR Technologies, Inc., a cellular radio/PCS manufacturing firm that was sold to Grayson Wireless. Currently, he is chairman & CEO of Wireless Valley Communications, Inc., a company specializing in in-building/microcell and fixed wireless planning and measurement tools and techniques. He has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 13 books in the wireless field, including the textbooks Wireless Communications: Principles & Practices (Prentice Hall, 1996), Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications (Prentice Hall, 1999), and several compendia of papers, including Cellular Radio & Personal Communications: A Book of Selected Readings (IEEE Press, 1995), Cellular Radio & Personal Communications: Advanced Selected Readings (IEEE Press, 1996), and most recently Smart Antennas: Adaptive Arrays, Algorithms, & Wireless Position Location (IEEE Press, 1998). He has co-authored over 130 technical journal and conference papers. He serves on the editorial board of the the International Journal of Wireless Information Networks (Plenum Press, NY), is a Fellow of the IEEE, and an active member of the IEEE Communications and Vehicular Technology Societies. He is also a Fellow and past member of the board of directors of the Radio Club of America.
