This is a wooden shelf that I put in.   It's great because you have a place to put stuff on top and underneath and it's SOLID.  The little silver box on the right under the shelf is the Sony 10 CD mulitchanger that I put in with the head unit.  I've never had the thing skip yet under any conditions.

The shelf brackets are mounted to the metal frame through 1 inch rubber spacers under the inside body panels.  Through this method I can very tightly fasten the bracket through the plastic walls without crushing them to stop any squeaks or vibration though the shelf or the walls.  I can remove the shelf and brackets with a Hex Wrench and about 5 minutes.

Another advantage to the shelf is that with the door closed, from outside a strange can't see what is under the shelf.  I left enough room between the door and the shelf to put tall grocery bags or a Jerry can of gas.
