Powhiri - Piritahe Marae. This is a traditional welcome party of Maori NZ, The basic idea of a powhiri is to remove bad spirits that we bring from the places we have come from. For the Maori their land is sacred and it's only be by being welcomes onto particular piece of land (such as waiheke island) and sharing food that the bad spirits are banished. Walking onto a marae is a time of remembrance, sadness and showing of respect. | ||||||||
