The 20 pound note features the portrait of Daniel O'Connell an Irish patriot, born in 1775 and died in 1847. He became a lawyer and was an outstanding orator. In 1828 he ran for Parliament in the county of Clare and was elected. He was not allowed to take his seat though because the oath was contrary to his Catholic faith. His election could not be overlooked and this eventually lead to the Catholic Emancipation Bill in 1829 and he became the 1st Catholic to be seated in Parliament. In 1842 he began to advocate the for the repeal of Union with Great Britain.
