In 1996, there were 155 leasing companies registered with the central bank of Malyasia (Bank Negara). The total assets of these companies amounted to RM 16 billion as at end 1996.

One of the features of Malaysian leasing is the heavy concentration of the disbursements towards the manufacturing sector - about one third of total leasing activities go towards manufacturing. The distinction between leasing and hire-purchase is common in Malaysian - obviously following the British system.

The recent crisis in Asia has affected Malaysian finance companies as well - a report on 25th Feb., 1999 indicated that MBf Finance Bhd, one of Malaysia's biggest finance companies, needs a recapitalisation of nearly three billion ringgit ($789.5 million) to restore its financial health.
