Going Home Carol was always worried about walking home at night. The city had grown so much, and downtown wasn't as friendly as it used to be. It was Monday night, the streets were empty, only the occasional taxi passed her by as she walked along the road trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible. Carol hated her job, well not so much the actual work, but the fact that Carol got off so late frightened her. In the distance the motor of a larger vehicle could be heard, mixed in with the deep sound of bass pulsating though the night. Carol began to shiver, probably another group of teenagers that will zoom by hollering things at her. The vehicle was getting closer, Carol could now see the headlights through the windows of an office building ahead of her. She kept as far away from the street as possible, hoping they wouldn't see her. As they passed her, the motor leveled off and the bass ceased. Carol sped up. From the corner of her eye Carol noticed they were driving along side of her. Carol refused to look over, refused to make eye contact. She wished another car would pass by, maybe then they would stop. This was worse then just driving by, what were they doing? Carol could hear them talking, calling to her. Ignoring them, Carol was almost jogging now, her heels echoing in the street. The vehicle accelerated and caught up to her. Carol began to cry, she wished she was at home. Up ahead was an intersection, the lights were flashing red, almost warning her about what was to come. Carol approached the intersecting street, hoping to see someone. The only sight was the glare of the headlights still. Carol broke into a full out run. Only two blocks from home. The vehicle remained next to her. Every move she made was followed. She could see her apartment building in the distance, it seemed so far away. Carol could still hear them talking. Probably laughing at her. She approached her building, she could hear them clearly now. They must have their windows down. Carol reached the steps of the apartment. She could hear the squeak of the vehicles brakes, as it came to a stop. Carol turned around to get a quick look. A movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention, as Carol stared at the vehicle. She turned. Three shadows disappeared into the night. "You're lucky you live this close" a voice called from the vehicle. The voice sounded friendly, but Carol wasn't sure. "Those three were following you since you left that other building." Carol was speechless. Suddenly, she felt strongly like going home, a hunger for home, though she was only several steps away. |
