Admissions Procedure

Admissions to MBA program is granted to the applicants on the basis of their performance in a rigorous testing procedure.

Following the initial screening through an aptitude test, the applicants are evaluated analytically through interviews. Applicants who qualify this stage sit in an hour long group discussion where their communication skills, confidence, maturity and leadership potential are evaluated. The applicants then go through a projective achievement motivation test as a final check of their suitability for studies at IBA and a career in business administration.

BBA (Hons.) and MIS students are admitted into the Spring Semester starting in January, while MBA students are admitted in Fall Semester starting in August.

Admission procedures for the BBA (Hons.) and MIS program start in November while those for MBA program start in May. The aptitude tests are administered on Fridays.

Advertisements are placed in leading newspapers of the country, usually a week before the start of the admission procedures.

The Vice Chancellor, the Dean or the Director of the Institute or faculty of Business Administration & Commerce may refuse admission to any candidate without assigning any reason. Admission of all students is provisional and is subject to the final approval by University of Karachi.

Requirements at the Time of Interview

All applicants to the MBA and MIS program must have completed graduation at the time of appearing for the interview. Applicants whose final year results have not been announced at the time of the interview should not have any deficiency in the first year exam.

Applicants for the BBA (Hons.) program must have completed Intermediate (High School Certificate) or equivalent at the time of appearing for the interview. Applicants whose final year results have not been announced at the time of the interview should have no deficiency in the first year of their intermediate exams.

To get admission, the student must produce these documents and pay the fee within a time limit to be prescribed by IBA.

Evaluation and Grading

The performance of students is evaluated through a continuous testing procedure spread over the entire period of studies. Besides the final semester exam, which carries forty percent of the total marks, there are a number of tests and short quizzes.

Hourly exams are administered every month and thus a student sits through 3 such exams for each course every semester (the two best scores are counted towards the final grade). A number of surprise quizzes are taken during classes to monitor the daily effort of the students. Moreover, the performance of students in class discussions, written assignments, research reports etc., is evaluated and forms a part of their overall grades.

In the rating of the students, three passing grades, A, B and C and one failing grade F are used. In terms of their numerical equivalents the letter grades denote the following:

A 87 - 100

B 72 - 86

C 60 - 71

F below 60

If a student fails to submit term paper, report, home assignment and laboratory assignment, which are requirements of a course, the instructor may allow him the benefit of an "incomplete." A student who is awarded an "incomplete" in any course can get it removed within 6 weeks from the end of the term. If the requirements are not met within this time limit, the student’s grade in that course is converted into a "failure." On completion of the course, however, the student does not receive any further grade, but is allowed the benefit of the numerical grade point weight of an "incomplete."

No "make up" exam is allowed in any course under any circumstances.

A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed at the end of the course for all students. Final letter grades in each course are converted to grade points on the following basis:

A 4 Grade points

B 3 Grade points

C 2 Grade points

I (Incomplete) 1 Grade point

F 0 Grade point

The GPA is computed as follows:

Sum of (Credit Hours x grade points)

Sum of Credit Hours

The summer internships are closely monitored and evaluated. Interns are encouraged to discuss their problems with the faculty members during the follow up meetings arranged for this purpose during the internship period. Faculty members frequently visit the organizations to keep abreast of the progress of the internees.

At the end of the internship, students submit an internship report and are also interviewed in detail. Feedback about the performance of the internees is also obtained from the supervisors of the internees. A final grade is awarded to the internees on the basis of the interview, the follow up meetings and visits, the internship report, and the company’s evaluation.

Statement of Rules and Regulations

Attendance

Students are required to attend regularly all lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars and field work as may be specified for each course in a semester. In case a student accumulates more than the allowed number of absence in any course in a semester, he is awarded "F" in that particular course

The provision of absences is for emergencies such as late comings or sickness during a semester. They cannot be used on the first day of the semester or before the semester or before hourly/final examinations. Remaining absent on the first day of the semester is considered a serious offense. Also, a very serious view is taken of absences before the hourly examinations / final examinations or before / after holidays.

A student is allowed a maximum of six absences in a course in the Morning Program during regular semesters.

Morning Program students taking courses in the Evening Program during the regular semester are allowed a maximum of four absences in a course.

Morning Program students taking courses in the Summer Semester are allowed a maximum of three absences in a course.

Withdrawal from a Course

Students are allowed to withdraw from one course in a semester if such withdrawal will help the student in improving his performance in the remaining courses. The withdrawal must be sought on a prescribed form, before the third hourly examinations. Withdrawal from a course is not treated as a failure. However, once a student has accumulated more than six absences in any course, he is not allowed to withdraw from that course and is awarded "F."

Grade Point Average (GPA)

A student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.2 on a cumulative basis during his stay at IBA. Any student with a GPA of less than 2.0 is dropped from the rolls of the Institute forthwith.

A student securing a GPA between 2.0 and 2.2 is put on probation for one semester.

At the end of the semester, he is required to improve his GPA and bring it up to the required minimum of 2.2

If a probationer shows an improvement, but his GPA is still below 2.2 his probation may be extended for another semester.

If he still fails to bring his GPA to 2.2 by the end of the next semester he is dropped from the rolls of the Institute.

If a student fails to pass certain courses and yet manages to maintain his GPA equal to or above 2.2 he is allowed to repeat and clear the course(s) or substitute(s) (whenever permissible) before the degree is awarded to him.

The GPA is computed at the end of each semester including summer semester that a student enrolls in.

Conduct and Discipline

A student is deemed to have lost good standing if his conduct is found objectionable from the disciplinary point of view.

Summer Semester

Students doing an internship during the summer semester are not allowed to register for an advance credit or additional course. However, such students are allowed to remove deficiency in one course during the summer semester.

Advanced credit courses cannot be taken in the regular semester.

Students not doing an internship can clear up to two deficiencies, or enroll for two additional courses in the summer semester.

A student can register for a maximum of two courses in the summer semester.

Students may withdraw from one course during the summer semester. Withdrawal should be sought within a week of the Mid-term exams.
