ValueLine Quick Screen

Another quick screen that can be used when looking at ValueLine for possible stocks to complete a thorough evaluation. Keep in mind that you are accepting the judgement of the analyst that prepared the report for Value Line. If your screening does not meet these criteria you might want to look elsewhere for stocks to evaluate.

UPPER LEFT CORNER: Projections 2000 -2002

High Price with close to 100% gain from current price.

 

TABLE DATA:

  • EPS (third line) shows history of annual increase, with few or no down years.

  • EPS projection close to double last year's actual EPS

  • at least 5 years of data available

 

LOWER LEFT BOX: Earnings Per Share

Consistent growth trend of quarterly earnings, future estimates show continuation of growth trend.

 

Lower Right: Earnings Predictability

It depends on company... the higher the number, the less chance of an earnings surprise, either positive or negative. A number of 80-100 is a good range.

 

Top Left: Safety and Timeliness

Safety better than 4 or 5, Timeliness better than 4 or 5 which might warn of near-term price drop or stagnation. Some say that timeliness is not a good indicator of a stock's long term growth outlook.
