WELCOME TO THE HIGH DESERT OF CALIFORNIA

The terror of the High Desert
Home of the Desert Tortoise
We came to Barstow, Ca. about 17 years ago. I had been appointed Postmaster of this small town. In the 13 years I had that position we grew from 9,600 home deliveries to over 14,000. I retired about five years ago and decided to stay for a while. The weather is pretty nice. It may get hot in the summer but it is pretty dry. Usually when the sun goes down, so does the temperature. In the winter it gets fairly cool but very seldom gets below freezing. When the sun comes up so does the temperature. In the 17 years that I have lived here it has snowed only several times. Seldom enough that I had to take pictures to remember it. The Mojave River flows through town, too. I have pictures of the couple of times that it did. That is when it flowed water, not sand.  Besides the heat and low humidity is good for my wife's arthritis.

Since retiring from the U.S. Postal Service I have become active with The Retired Officers Association. I am on the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Legislative Committee and maintain their Home Page. (See link below). We are very much concerned with retaining the benefits promised by the Government to Career Retired Military. We are also are interested maintaining the Active Military Force at the highest level in order to protect the Security of this Nation. Along with the organization's concerns I also have some of my own, which I make known to our Congressional Representitives.

I have also worked out a pretty good solution for Social Security.

We are centrally located. We are only about two hours from everywhere in every direction. To the North we have Las Vegas, Death Valley, and a hour further to the Sierras. To the East there is Laughlin and London Bridge. To the South the San Bernadrdino and San Gabriel Mountains, Joshua Tree National Monument, Palm Springs, the Los Angeles Area and the Beaches. A hour further there is San Diego and its attractions and of course Tuuana, Baja California, thats Mexico to the uninformed. To the West we have Bakersfield and the entrance to the Central Valley , if that thrills you.
