Welcome Back

The state officers would like to say that we hope you all had a phenomenal summer! We're looking forward to the best year CT FBLA has ever had. Already, we have tons of fun and exciting activities planned for the year. Be sure to read the monthly edition of The Leader's Reader to ensure that you don't miss any important information or updates.

Meet Your Officers:

Hello, my name is Elyssa Rokicki and I am proud to be your FBLA State President. I am also the FBLA president of my local chapter, Bolton High. I am a senior who enjoys cheerleading and dancing. FBLA is a great organization which I am very enthusiastic about. I look forward to a successful year with you and hope to meet as many of you as possible. If you ever need me for anything or have questions, please feel free to call on me anytime. I represent you and hope to make this year in FBLA the best!

Hi, my name is Jennifer Hughes and I am one of the state vice presidents. I am a senior at Manchester High. I love swimming, playing the flute, piccolo, and handbells, and eating bagels. I plan to major in business management next year. I'm looking forward to a great year in FBLA and hope to see all of you at our state FBLA events!

Hi! I'm Diana Janik, one of your state vice presidents for 1998-99. I'm a senior at Southington High School, where I play on the field hockey and softball teams. I like apple juice, the Beastie Boys, and the color orange. FBLA is very important to me; it has had a positive impact on my life, and I believe it can do the same for everyone. I'm really excited about CT FBLA this year, and I think it could be the best year ever! Fell free to e-mail me with any questions, comments or concerns.

Hey! My name is Julie Ryder and I am proud to be your CT State Secretary. I enjoy running and playing softball. I like to chill with Dave Matthews Band and Phish and green is the color you most often see me wearing. I am very enthusiastic about this coming year. I hope that together we can make FBLA fun and educational. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to drop me something via postage or internet. Have a great year!

Hi, my name is Adam Bokon, and I am your FBLA State Treasurer. I would like to quickly welcome everyone to FBLA for this upcoming year. I'm currently a senior at Southington High School along with Julie and Diana. At Southington High, I am currently the Community Service V.P. of our local chapter. In addition to FBLA, I also compete on the school's tennis and ski racing teams. As autumn rolls on, I will be applying to various colleges in the general area. I plan to go into college to earn a degree in business with a focus on finance and investments.

CT Fall Leadership Conference

Those of you who attended or heard about the 1997 CT Fall Leadership Conference know what an amazing event it was. This year's conference is expected to be even bigger and better. Open to all local officers and advisors, the CT Fall Leadership Conference will be held at the Ramada Hotel in Meriden on Monday, November 2. The theme for the conference will be "teamwork: today and tomorrow." Be sure to register soon so that you can be a part of the excitement!

CBEA Conference

Your state officer team will be going to the Aqua Turf, October 21, 1998 for a CT Business Educator's Association conference. There we will have a display and host a workshop about FBLA. As officers, we will inform more people about FBLA and what the organization offers. We hope to get some new professional members and chapters while there. Wish us luck.

N.F.L.C. News

The National Fall Leadership Conference, to be held Nov. 20-22 in Providence, Rhode Island is rapidly approaching. The weekend conference is a terrific way to learn more about leadership and FBLA as well as to have fun and meet new people. If you are interested in attending, send your registration in as soon as possible. Your advisor should already have a copy of all of the registration and information materials. If you have any questions or need a registration packet, please contact any one of the state officers. Make sure that you are a part of the excitement.

Local Chapter Visits

Last year, in an effort to open the lines of communication between the state officers and local chapters, the state officer team visited several local chapters. We hope to continue these visits this year. The benefits of the visits were numerous. Members had the opportunity to get to know their state officers in a casual atmosphere. The state officers were able to inform local chapters about state chapter activities as well as answer any questions that members might have. Local chapter visitations further allow state officers to help the advisors and officers of newly created or reinstated chapters. If you would like the state officer team to visit your local chapter, please contact State President Elyssa Rokicki.

Coming Soon!!!
New FBLA Website

This year we will have a CT FBLA Website that will have an easy to remember address, have a link to the national website, be easy to find, and more. The website is being made now. When ready to view, we will let you know the address. If your local chapter has a website, let us know the address and we'll set up a link.

1998 National Leadership Conference

As many of you know, the National Leadership Conference (NLC) was held in Orlando, Florida this past summer. The CT delegation both completed successfully and had a great time. Madeline Manning Mimms was the keynote speaker. Captivating her audience with her story of her athletic struggles, Madeline taught us all the meaning of hard work and determination. Many delegates visited Disney's parks and attractions. The weather was beautiful and a wonderful time was enjoyed by all! Congratulations to the following CT FBLA members who won awards at the Conference:

Kyle Hossain, Bolton
Top 15 - Impromptu Speaking

Vinnie Checcia, New Milford
9th Place - Accounting II

Joe Gaffney, Edward Metzger, and Farres Moidu, Ridgefield
8th Place - Entrepreneurship

Mike Graboski, Simsbury
8th Place - Intro. To Impromptu Speaking

Jaclyn Schienda, Southington
5th Place - Ms. Future Business Leader

Congratulations to all of you!!!
