Roles and Functions of the Holy Ghost

(Provided to our Sunday School Class by Brandon Reader who got it from his seminary teacher)

  1. Shows a person what to do: 2 Nephi 32:5; D&C 28:15 and 39:6
  2. Bestows fruits of Spirit which include joy, love, peace, patience and gentleness: Galations 5:22-23; Romans 15:13: D&C 6:23 and 11:12-13
  3. He gives the gift of the Spirit: Moroni 10:8-17; D&C 46:11-26
  4. Allows person to speak with authority and boldness: 1 Nephi 10:22; Alma 18:35; Moroni 8:16
  5. He testifies to the truthfulness of God and other gospel principles: John 15:26; D&C 21:9; and 100:8
  6. Helps us discern the thoughts and intents of others: Alma 12:3 and 18;:16, 20, 32, 35; D&C 63:41
  7. Gives truth, knowledge, insight, understanding and enlightenment: John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:9-11, 14; D&C 6:14, 11:13-14 and 76:5-10, 116
  8. Can bring ideas, concepts or principles back to remembrance: John 14:26
  9. He can inspire a person in what to say in the very hour needed: Luke 12:11-12; D&C 84:85; and 100:5-6
  10. He brings sanctification and remission of sins: Alma 13:12; 2 Nephi 31:17; 3 Nephi 27:20; D&C 19:31
  11. He can carry truth to the hearts of people and soften them: 1 Nephi 2:15; 2 Nephi 33:1; Alma 24:8; 1 Nephi 1:15
  12. He can enhance a person's skills and abilities to perform a task: Exodus 31:3-5; 1 Nephi 18:1-4; D&C 46:18
  13. He sometimes either constrains or restrains: 1 Nephi 7:15; 2 Nephi 28:1; and 32:7; Alma 14:11; Mormon 3:16
  14. He edifies: 1 Corinthians 14:12; D&C 50:22-23; and 84:106
  15. As one of titles implies, He gives comfort: John 14:26; D&C 88:3
