1Smith, Joseph, et. al., Petition of Joseph Smith and Others of Sambro and the Harbours Adjacent (PANS), 14 May 1826, RG5/Series Pa/Vol. 121/1826.
This petition, requesting salt to be imported into the area so that the Fisheries could operate, was signed by 135 fishermen including William, James, Thomas, Samuel and Charles Gray, all, probably, sons of William Gray. They would have been in age ranging from 36 to 44. Also signing were William Gray, probably the father, Abijah Smith (Abijah's father-in-law) and William Ring (probably also Abijah's father-in-law.) The full text of the Petition is found under William Gray. The only son not signing was Josiah.
"To the Honorable The House of Assembly of Nova Scotia.
In Petition of the Subscribers Inhabitants of Sambro and Harbors adjacent
Most Humbly and Respectfully Sheweth
That your Petitioners are solely engaged in the Shore Fisheries of this Province and have followed that occupation from their youth, formerly with more or less success, but latterly under disadvantages of no ordinary magnitude., disadvantages sufficient almost to induce them to abandon the pursuits which they inherited from their fathers, and to betake themselves to habits, which would be entirely new to themselves and as they humbly presume of familys beneficial consequence to their country. That while other braches of Industry have been cherished by Leghislative aid, and prospered almost beyhond precedent in a time of Peace, and while the Fisheries, and the Labors of your petitioners, and others engaged in like occupation, have in the humble opinion of your Petitioners continued to be the chief sources and suport of the Revenue of the Province,--they find the fisheries in the most languishing and deplorable state, and in a measure neglected or despised. That your petitioners are far from wishing to impress upon the Honorable House, the idea that the Fisheries alone should be fostered by its care without regard to other branches of Industry. your Petitioners do hope and trust, and humbly submit from their importance, that this general Assemby will be pleased to give to the Fisheries that consixcderation and suporta which they so justly merit.
That the want of a regular supply of Salt suitabcle for the Fisheries has been severly felt by your Petiatiaoners, and to this cause they humbly attribute atheir present deprssed state, and they concieve from the experience they haave had in former years of the benefiats that resulted to them individually from the Salt Bounty that this mode of encouragement [?] us some very considerable advantage over the other methods which have been suggested, and on that your Petitioners respectfully and earnestly beg leave to solicit the attention and consieration of this Honorable House to the foregoing statements, and to the subject of the Fisheries in general, and humbly pray that your Honorable House willed to the restablishment of this Brnch be pleased to grxant such Bounty on the Imprtation of Salt into this Province as will insuref a regular supply and at a reasonable price, and to bestow such other encouragement as to your wisdom shall deem best.a And Your Petitioners as in Duty bound will ever Pray."

2Cornwallis Document.
!SOURCE: Source for both marriages of William Hart is the "Cornwallis
Document;." This doc also says that "William Hart, Sr., and his son were
lost on their way from Halifax to Sambro when a storm came up and it is
supposed the sea swamped the boat as nothing was found of the bodies or
wreckage." We are left to wonder who was the son? And, we assume, this
was William Hart's father. Was he the son?.

These records were transcribed. The transcriber said they were written in the old German script and were hard to decipher. The Page number is followed by a number which is probably the line number such as Page 4-43 (Page 4, line 43).
