“THE BRIDGE”
THE WALNUT CREEK SERVICE UNIT NEWSLETTER
FROM YOUR SUDS
Hi everyone! It’s about that time again! It’s time to get ready to have our first of the year swim, eat and meet get together. This is open to all adult volunteers within our Service Unit. It has been a busy summer but now it’s time to prepare for those planning meetings with our girls. Summer, just prior to school, is the perfect time to schedule a meeting where the girls can decide what their focus is for this coming year in Girl Scouts. You can go over their individual and troop goals, to prepare them for what will drive their Fall Product Sales. There are a lot of really neat things on our Service Unit Calendar of Events this year and I want to thank all of the adults that came to Ninfa’s after the Service Team Conference, to make up that calendar. We have a full Service Team with enthusiastic adults that are willing and ready to help all of us pull off these exciting adventures that they have planned for us to do this year! Our Juliette population is growing and they are eager to be a part of our wonderful group. You will notice that I have entitled this section in the plural format. That’s because we have 4, count them 4, adult volunteers, who will be helping to make this an even more exciting year than last year (and we thought last year was cool!) You haven’t seen anything yet! These are some awesome women and I am very excited and honored to have them aboard in these new roles. We will all get a chance to visit, play and plan for the events this coming year, so join us on August 7th, at the home of Dixie Paulos. I sent an email out with a map and info to all of you last week. If you did not receive this, it was because some of your emails bounced me, thinking it was junk mail or something. Re-email me and I will try again. I have info listed below that you might want to read and share with your girls as part of your planning. Of course, the SU Calendar of Events is also an important pat of the planning process, so if you haven’t already received this, just email me and let me know. We will still be looking for committee chairs and chairpersons for some of the activities, so be thinking about what appeals to you and your team and be ready to share your thoughts at the upcoming meeting. I am looking forward to seeing all of you soon!
Penny (pennypetrich@hotmail.com) and Carrie and Christy and Donyiel!

Greetings!
We hope you are having a great summer! Here at Lone Star Council, we are busy preparing for an exciting new program year. In addition to building a spacious new Program Center for our membership, we are developing phenomenal opportunities for girls. Our goal is to reach girls throughout central Texas and provide them with activities that will help them grow strong. Together with your continued support we can make this happen. Girl Scouts. Where Girls Grow Strong.

Camp Texlake Rocks!
More than 1600 girls chose Camp Texlake as their second home this summer. With new programs such as "Insomniacs" and "Finding Nemo", Camp Texlake was the place to be for Brownie - Senior Girl Scouts. Throughout the six sessions thus far, girls participated in a multitude of activities ranging from horseback riding, SCUBA diving and dancing. Some girls also tested their athletic endurance with a new program "Survivor Challenge" which included obstacle courses, raft races and team building activities.

Explore The Possibilities
Looking for fun activities for your Girl Scout or troop?
Check out the 2004 Fall/Winter edition of Possibilities, the Council's new program guide. Jam-packed with exciting new events such as Sports Zone, the publication will be available at the end of July. There is also a listing of teen workshops, "The Edge" technology activities, program collaborators, and off- site facility information. New this year, the book will be mailed to the homes of 6th-12th graders so they can get a jumpstart on planning for Studio 2B programs. Make sure they check out the Special Interest Groups, such as Artistic Expression and the Outdoor Adventure Team. Every Girl Scout leader will also receive a copy of the book. In addition, program information and registration forms will be available online at the council's website www.girlscouts-lonestar.org

Girl Scout Olympian
Congratulations to Summer Postell, an 11-year-old Junior Girl Scout in the Mustang Valle Service Unit. Summer, a Gold and Silver medallist in state track finals in Texas, was selected to compete in the Junior Olympics! According to our Girl Scout mom Charlene, who is the co-Service Unit Director for Mustang Valle, Summer trained hard and literally jumped her way to the Junior Olympics. At the state competition, Summer finished third in the long jump finals (12'9.75") and first (14.67 and 14.55 in the semi-finals and finals respectively) in the 80-meter hurdles. No one else got under 15 seconds! The family will be heading to the Junior Olympics in Iowa the beginning of August. Again, Congratulations Summer for reaching your goals and showing that Girl Scouts are STRONG!

Service Team Conference
MORE THAN 300 volunteers attended the June Service Team Conference, "Celebrate the Magic" held at Manor High School. Throughout the day, attendees participated in workshops ranging from web design to volunteer recruitment. This was a great opportunity for staff and volunteers to share information and get ready for the new program year.
If you know someone that would make a wonderful volunteer, refer her or him to US! We have great opportunities to make a difference. For more
information about volunteering, send them to the volunteer section of our website.
