TRAIL OF LIGHTS
There has been a date change, per the City of Austin, concerning when we have the Trail this year. Our new date is Thursday, December 22nd. They will try to have packets available for me prior to the next SU meeting along with the volunteer parking passes. The City felt that since we have been handling so many visitors each year, and it gets busier and busier on that first Saturday, that they would prefer not to have a youth organization handling it. In my opinion, we are perfect for the job as we have years and years of training and more adults than necessary to run the trail. They require a minimum of 80….. ( I think we have about 150 adults show up) oh well….. sorry about that! Please email me with your requests for displays. Talk to your girls and families to find out if they want to participate. Make sure you do not over-commit on the displays – we want the girls and families to be able to enjoy the Trail for at least half the night. I will have a sign up sheet at the November 3rd SU meeting (yes, that’s NEXT Thursday) but would like to know from as many of you as possible by email, so we can concentrate on other business at the meeting. pennypetrich@hotmail.com
LEADER INVESTITURE/REDEDICATION
Just a reminder that we will be having a Leader Investiture and Rededication Ceremony at the next Leader’s meeting. If you have never received your yellow leader bar before, please let me know so that I can make sure to have one for you. All of your parents/volunteers are invited to come and participate, as always, to every monthly meeting. pennypetrich@hotmail.com

Nature Nut Festival
Camp-Out and Harvest
October 28 – 30, 2005
Arboreal Ardor
Few can resist the scrumptious crunch of a fresh pecan (Carya illinoensis), and this festival transports us to the source. The two-day, one-night camp-out highlights the history, beauty, and culinary delights of the Texas state tree and its biological cousins, walnuts and hickories. We’ll sing and taste the pleasures of these versatile trees as we frolic beneath their bountiful branches.
Easy as Pie!
Other activities for this enjoyable weekend include guided hikes, river swimming and tubing, and wildlife observation. We’ll share two pot-luck feasts—Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast—and trade pecan entrée and dessert recipes.
Satisfy your foraging instinct by collecting as many nuts as you can carry. BYO Bucket!
The Setting

TROOP 1500 SCREENING AT ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE
This from Julia Cuba - the adult who works with the Girl Scouts Beyond
Bars Program. If you have not seen Troop 1500, it's a must see. It is a documentary
film that won high acclaim at the SXSW Film Festival - and it follows our GS
program for a while - I think a year or more - and is fascinating. There are
several organizations involved in carrying off this program and I found
interviewing the representative from the state agencies and/or UT program after
the Service Team Conference, was extremely informative.
This would be appropriate for adults and older girls - maybe Cadettes and Seniors
or some mature Juniors - it's pretty emotional and very realistic. Read what
Julia has written below.
Pen
Hello everyone,
As showbiz goes (apparently), we often do not find out about important dates until
the last minute. So, we found out that we will have these screenings and so
here is the information for them. We have been told by the Alamo Drafthouse
owners that if we can sell out these two shows, that they will allow us to
continue to organize screenings at their facilities. Which is great! But also
terrifying because we have to get the word out. They are not sure which theater
we will be in. It could be a theater that holds 110 people or it could be a
theater that hold 220 people. Either way, we have to be prepared to sell out
the larger theater, which means getting 440 people to show up these screenings.
I know last minute work is everyone's enemy - so my biggest apologies.
Does anyone have contacts at other schools where we could post this information?
Or other orgs who would be willing to post the information?
Julia Cuba

Troop
1500 to screen at Alamo Drafthouse South 10/24 and 10/25
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DISTRIBUTE WIDELY
ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE SOUTH TO SCREEN AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY "TROOP
1500"
OCTOBER 24TH AND 25TH AT 7 PM
Q&A to follow
$8 at the door ($6 students and card-carrying Girl Scouts)
TROOP 1500: A new film about a troop of girls whose mothers are incarcerated,
and their groundbreaking efforts to reconnect with their mothers, and secure
their own freedom from a future in prison.
Their mothers may be convicted criminals, but the girls of Austin, Texas Girl Scout
Troop 1500 want to be doctors, social workers and marine biologists. At the Hilltop
Prison in Gatesville, Texas, Troop 1500 unites daughters with mothers who are behind bars, serving
time for serious crimes, offering them a chance to rebuild their broken bonds.
Facing steep sentences from the courts and tough questions from their daughters,
the mothers struggle to mend their fractured relationships with their
daughters. The girls, who have been trained in camera and interviewing as part
of their troop experience, are the heart of the film as they not only allow the
camera to enter their own lives but also use the cameras to interview their mothers,
asking some tough questions. Emmy and Grammy award-winning filmmakers Karen
Bernstein and Ellen Spiro volunteered with Troop 1500 for two years before
making the film and gained unprecedented access from Girl Scouts - Lone Star
Council, the Gatesville Prison facility, the wardens and the families
themselves; the result is an eye-opening look at the struggles faced by the
more than 1.5 million American children who have a parent behind bars. The TV
version of TROOP 1500 will air nationally on the Emmy Award winning PBS series
Independent Lens, hosted by Edie Falco, on Tuesday, March
21, 2006 at 10PM.
Ninety percent of female inmates are single parents and their daughters are six
times more likely to land in the juvenile justice system. TROOP 1500 poignantly
reveals how Enterprising Girl Scouts Beyond Bars, an inspired yet controversial
effort by the Girl Scouts - Lone Star Council, the YWCA, Crime Prevention
Institute and UT School of Social Work, is working to help these at-risk young
girls deal with their unique circumstances and break the cycle of crime within
families. It’s emblematic of the national Girl Scouts continuing effort to
meet, serve and empower girls in all circumstances.
Now you can see "Troop 1500" at the Alamo Drafthouse South (1120
South Lamar, Austin, Texas) on Monday, October 24th and Tuesday, October 25th at 7 PM. Tickets are
$8 at the door and $6 for students and Girl Scouts. This film is has high
emotional content - children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a
parent/guardian. When "Troop 1500" screened at the Alamo Drafthouse
South during SXSW, it sold out a half hour before the film began. Please arrive
early.
If you have questions, please contact Julia Cuba or Billy Malomon at the Girl
Scouts - Lone Star Council at 512-453-7391.

GOLD AWARD (Thanks Alison for sharing!)
One of my Senior Scouts is doing a teen duffle for Christmas for
Hurricane victims for her Gold Award and she asked I pass her flyer on to other
service units....Therefore, I am taking advantage of the list that Penny has
provided to do so. I think this is a cool idea that Amanda has put
forward. Especially, given that Amanda's mom my co-leader is fighting
breast cancer right now. So, if any of ya'll are looking for a new
project.....ya, like we don't come up with enough on our own....any assistance
you can give Amanda is a gift well given.

What’s your favorite story about a Girl Scout experience? How have you seen girls change over time? Help us spread the word about Girl Scouts through The Lone Star Council Speakers Bureau! Attend a training to learn the ins-outs of public speaking and then share your experiences with the community once or twice during the year. Simply sign up for training and the Council will provide you with speaking engagement alerts. Just choose one or two speaking opportunities that fit your schedule and tell your story! ">
Dear Girl Scout Supporter:
Interested in the Girl Scouts - Lone Star Council's Speaker's Bureau?
We are a group of adult Girl Scouts, both council staff and volunteers, who love to talk about what Girl Scouts has meant to us, and the girls that we love. So we decided to put our talents to good use for the council's benefit. Every year there is a training for members of the bureau to attend.
The next training is Tuesday, November 8, 2005 from 12 to 1:15PM here at the Lone Star Council. Please RSVP by responding to this email.
Basically, once you have completed the training you will receive email alerts about upcoming speaking opportunities. If you have the time free on your schedule, you can sign up to be our representative. These engagements could happen anywhere within our council service area. If you know of a business that would allow us to make a presentation, you could even schedule one yourself. The email alerts would look something like this (this is just an example):
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT ALERT: (EXAMPLE)
DATE: October 21, 2005
TIME: 10:30 AM
PLACE: Central Market @ Lamar and 38th in Austin, Texas
CONTACT: Store Manager, Leslie Tanger @ 512-563-7832, ext. 145 (This is just an example)
SPEECH DURATION: 10 minutes
VENUE: Central Market Manager's meeting
NO. OF PEOPLE: 12
Please RSVP as speaker for this event no later than October 1, 2005
Often times we present at all staff meetings for businesses such as HEB or UPS. Sometimes we do more formal things at a church or special event.
You will only be responsible for speaking to an audience with which you are comfortable, and for the length of time with which you are comfortable. We would never sign you up to be a keynote speaker at a special event if you felt uncomfortable with a large audience and long speech.
Most speeches last about 5 minutes and include the use of a video produced by the council if you want to use that. Your job would be to tell your personal story about being a member of Girl Scouts and then let folks know how to get involved.
