Walnut Creek Service Unit Meeting
Minutes
November 4, 2004
Meeting started at 6:35 p.m. with the flag ceremony.
New Leaders and Registration News
Carrie Manongdo introduced new leaders who were at the meeting. They included:
Since the last meeting, 5 new girls have registered for Girl Scouts in the Walnut Creek Service Unit.
Founders Day
This event was held on October 30th and Memorial United Methodist Church. 45 girls attended (75 registered) with the break down as follows:
BAIR Foundation
This foundation takes the overflow of kids that have been removed from their homes due to neglect, which the state is unable to assist. A list was circulated for people to sign up for children from this foundation to adopt at Christmas time. As part of the items purchased for these children, please make sure a backpack with a nametag is included for each child. Since there were several children with the same first name on the list, the list that we can select from has the children’s last names listed. For confidentiality sake, only include the first name on the tags. If you or your troop, is adopting a child/children, please make sure the BAIR Foundation receives the items by December 10th. Penny will send an updated list to everyone after the meeting. Anyone can help out with this endeavor so if you have any co-workers, family members or friends who might be willing to help, please forward the list to them.
Council News
The council received a check for $40,000 from the Pervasive Run. This race had 1,800 participants and several of the WCSU troops and leaders were represented at this event.
FOGS Report
Instead of having one fundraiser for the Friends of Girl Scouts, it was decided that each troop would be given envelopes for each girl to donate money at the service unit’s primary events. Also at these events, a jar will be placed at the registration tables to collect any spare change people might have to donate to FOGS. With these efforts, $15 was raised at registration rally and $202 at Founder’s Day. At Founder’s Day, one family donated $100. At the Investiture and Rededication Ceremony, envelopes and flyers for FOGS will be included in the ceremony brochures and a jar will be set-up at the check-in table.
Holiday Dance
Amanda Noll reminded the group about a fund raising dance that her troop is hosting. The dance will be on Saturday, December 11th from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Grace Church of the Nazarene. The cost will be $5 per person. You may give Amanda and/or Mona your money at the November or December leaders meetings. Mona will not have money at the dance, so you must purchase the tickets in advance of the event. Tickets can be purchased up to December 10th at Mona’s and Amanda’s house. There will be dancing, food, drinks, raffles and much more. All Girl Scouts and their favorite guy are welcomed to come. Also, if the Girl Scouts have friends they would like to invite and if these girls are able to act in appropriate Girl Scout fashion, then they are welcome as well. The dress code will be casual for this event. If you want to buy tickets or have any questions, you may call Amanda at 835-0231 or e-mail her at Sweet_Pea1291@yahoo.com . Penny will re-email the flyer about this event, to those who did not receive it the first time.
Got Cookies? T-shirts
These t-shirts cost $10 and are still available for purchase. The shirts are helpful to wear during cookie sales to make people aware that the sale is in progress. Penny will re-email the information regarding the shirts to those who did not receive it the first time.
Fall Camp-Out
The camp-out was held at the Nails Creek State Park at Lake Somerville. Julia did not believe this location was as good as the ones in the past. About 80 people attended this event.
Service Unit Investiture and Rededication Ceremony
This event will be held on November 12th at the Grace Church of the Nazarene. All troops should arrive between 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the church sanctuary and the reception will be held in the church gymnasium. Cathy Carrillo passed out an agenda to everyone and she asked that the leaders e-mail her with the names from each troop who were planning on attending. Her e-mail address is cathycarillo@hotmail.com . As part of the service, there will be a Girl Scout Promise and Law candle ceremony. Cathy needs 13 girls and 1 adult to help with this. She would prefer 2-3 girls from each level. A sheet was also circulated for those who are attending the ceremony to list what refreshments they are planning to bring to the reception. Cathy is expecting about 200 people to attend, so everyone should plan their refreshments accordingly.
Spring Camp-Out
Cathy Carrillo passed out a flyer for the spring camp-out at Krause Springs on April 22nd -24th. The theme is "Let’s Get Physical" and the cost will be $15 per person. Each girl attending the campout will be able to earn a level appropriate badge.
Fall Product Sales
The fall products will be delivered on November 10th. Paula Gardner has scheduled the following times for picking-up your troops items from Penny’s house:
Paula will be handing out deposit slips when orders are picked up.
Cookie Sales Information
On November 22nd, the initial cookie orders are due to Sheri Medina. Sheri has only received the names of nine cookie coordinators in the service unit even though there are 23 troops eligible to sell cookies. There is some concern about how the girls that participate in In-School Scouting will be able to sell cookies (if they want to) since those that participate in the program are only involved for nine weeks at a time. They are going to try and take the girls that participated in the fall semester and add them to an existing troop or hopefully they can form a troop on their own if they can get a parent from the school to volunteer as a leader. As of right now, any girl that participates in In-School Scouting will only be able to sell cookies by taking orders and then delivering the cookies after the fact. The name of the Piñatas has been changed to Iced-Berry Piñatas. Gus suggested that someone teach all of the girls how to say in Spanish "Would you like to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies?" There is still not a confirmed spot for initial cookie order pick-up, so if anyone knows of a potential location, please let Penny or Sheri know. Gus will check with Austin Bolt for the cookie pick-up and also check with Miller Blueprint to see if they will still laminate the girl’s posters for free. If anyone needs to contact Sheri during this time, her cell phone number is 350-7648.
Trail of Lights
On Saturday, December 18tih, the WCSU will be in charge of monitoring the displays. Penny asked if anyone had a specific display they wanted to cover. Troop 172 requested "Winnie the Pooh", Christy Curry’s troop requested "The Twelve Days of Christmas". Carrie’s Manongdo’s troop requested "Beauty and the Beast", Troop 324 requested to be by Troop 67 and Troop 470 requested that they not be put at the end of the trail. The trail is opened from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. and volunteers should plan on arriving at about 5:30 p.m. to be able to park up front. You will be given a volunteer parking pass to assist with your parking. All family members are invited to participate.
Thinking Day
Penny verified which troops were doing what country. At this time, the list is as follows:
Troop 22 – Italy Troop 67 – Canada Troop 87 – Australia
Troop 172 – Samoa Troop 181 – Ghana Troop 224 – Peru
Troop 259 – Japan Troop 369 – India Troop 1452/1274 – Greece
Troop 2047 – Switzerland Troop 1996 - Jamaica
Carrie mentioned that if someone was doing Scotland she met someone who would be willing to come and do a Scottish dance at the event.
