Notes for David Greenwalt, Sr.
Information from Minnie Clark Greenwalt states that David Greenwalt was born in Prussia. However In the 1850 Federal Census he states he was born in Kentucky. Research has failed to establish his parentage, however the Greenwalt (Greenawalt) name was listed in Hardin County, Kentucky in the late 1700's and early' 1800's. There is story that I have read from family members stating that David and his two brothers (originally from Kentucky) came to Keenes, llIinois, Wayne County from Springfield, llIinois with an old hunter. It is said that David met Eliza and fell in love at first sight and married her.
Land deed records for federal sale of property to David Greenwalt on March 12, 1836, 40 acres located in Wayne County, section 6, township 01S for the price of $1.25; March 24, 1838; 39.14 acres located In Wayne County, Section 6, Township 01S for the price of $1.25; October 2, 1854, 40 acres located in Wayne County, Section 20, Township 01N for the price of $0.12.
The 1840 Federal Census for Wayne County, IIinois shows David head of household with one male under age of five, one age 20 to 30, one age 80 to 90, two females age under five and one female age 20 to 30.
This census also lists an Elianor Greenwalt as head of household in Wayne County. I found a will dated November 20, 1800 from Hardin County, Kentucky for one James Bradley, showing a daughter Elianor Greenwalt. I also have a record of an Elianor Bradley marriage to a Jacob Greenwalt on December 30, 1797 In Hardin County, Kentucky. At this time we can not make a connection to the relationship between this Greenwalt and David (b) 1813.
The 1850 Federal Census for Wayne County, IIIinois shows David age 37 born In Kentucky, occupation of farmer; one female named Eliza age 31, born in Illinois; one female Myrena, age 13 born Illinois; one male Jeffery age 12, born lllinois; one, female M. E. age 11 born Illinois; one male Samuel age 10, born Illinois; one female Mary A. age 7, born Illinois; one male Bradley age 6, born IIIinois; one male George age 3, born Illinois; one male Solomon age 1, born Illinois.
The 1855 Wayne County, Illinois State Census shows David head of household with five males under age of 10, two age 10-20, one age 40-50; two females under age 10, one age 10-20, one age 20 to 30. Shows there was one male eligible for military duty in the household.
David Greenwalt, Sr. and Eliza Garrison Greenwalt are buried at the Garrison Temple Cemetery in the old part of the cemetery close to Jeffery Greenwalt's monument. There are no markers for their graves. (note) A Marker has been Installed.
The 1870 Federal Census for Jefferson County, Illinois shows a Maria L. Greenwalt widow of David Greenwalt, married April 4, 1857 with three children living with her (Missouri age 12, David Alfred age 10, Maria V. age 7).
