Simon is a garbageman, who many people suspect is retarded. He's not. He's shy, quiet and doesn't "want any trouble." He lives a miserable existence with his sick mother and chain-smoking sister. Then Henry Fool rents his basement. Henry is a charismatic poet who recognizes Simon's plight and encourages him to put his thoughts on paper when he can't express himself verbally. Simon responds by writing a poem that spans three notebooks, and "The Poem" causes quite a stir. Nothing happens quite like you'd expect in this film. It's both funny and disturbing, but it's never dull.
