A successful psychoanalyst (Nanni Moretti, who also directed) enjoys a placid, loving family life with a beautiful wife (Laura Morante) and two intelligent, attractive teenagers. But when one son drowns in a diving accident, the family's tight emotional bond is put to the test -- especially for Moretti, who tortures himself with second-guesses regarding what he might have done to prevent his son's death.

Summary from www.netflix.com

The first act of the movie paints an idyllic picture of a loving family. So what happens when an accident shatters the picture? "The Son's Room" understands how people react in this situation, and it perfectly paints a new picture of a grieving family. With the exception of Andrea's girlfriend, the movie is very realistic, but I didn't find it compelling. It gets all of the moments right, but it lacks emotion because it tells the story from Giovanni's (Nanni Moretti) perspective. He's an unemotional man who can't even become emotional after losing his son. That's fine, but it doesn't make for an engaging movie experience. I preferred In the Bedroom. --Bill Alward, May 26, 2003
