"Atlantis"
The night is new,
The lights shine bright.
There is a sense of calmness in the air;
A self-assuredness is found here.
Laughter rings in the houses;
Eyes sparkle as children play.
A couple sits on a rock,
Cuddling and kissing, sharing their love.
Suddenly, the water turns dark,
The ground shakes.
Screams fill the air as red lava
Flows over the city.
Merpeople swim everwhere,
trying to hide; trying to save themselves.
The low rumble gets louder and louder,
the buildings, ornate and beautiful as
They once were, collapse in piles
Of bland, stony, dust.
Caverns are filled with thick lava,
burning and drowning all.
Then, all is calm again,
silence falls heavily upon the ocean.
The one surviving mermaid swims out,
observing the greate ruins, until she comes upon
That lone couple, the lava hardened around them.
She reaches out and,
in awe, touches her friends gently,
Crying out as they crumple into a pile
of dust.
Shaking her head sadly, she swims away,
Never looking back,
Abandoning the once great empire.
