Creating a Basic Web Page ... Part 2

HOW TO GET NOTICED

Finally, your page is done. You've found a local service provider that will give you space for your page. Now you want people to see your creation.

Most people find Internet information by using search engines. What you want to do is to get the search engine robotics (and/or people) to notice your page.

META Tags -- One way of getting noticed is by typing keywords within a hidden code in the <HEAD> part of your page:

Example:

<HEAD>
<TITLE> You're Homepage</TITLE>
<META name="keywords" content="Write your keywords here, in a comma separated list">
</HEAD>

Get Registered -- If you don't want to sit and hope an engine picks up your page, another way to get noticed is by registering your page's URL address with a search engine. This way anyone using that particular search engine will pick up your page. Unless your page is very descriptive, you will still want to type in hidden key words.

Here are a few of the more popular search engines that will add your page to their site for free:

KISS -- Keep your page simple. It's very possible to have a progressive, flashy web page. However, most people will move on if it takes more than 10 seconds for a page to upload. To accommodate a wide range of browser versions, rule of thumb suggests that the total size of a single page be no more than 40K, including graphics. Also, if you can't tell by a quick look what your page is about it's not likely people are going to stick around to explore.

Piggy-back -- people on the Net love to share. Find a popular web site that likes to collect pages like yours. Ask the Webmaster if it's okay to link to their page and if they would be interested in a reciprocal link to your page.

Join a Web Ring -- Web Rings link together like-minded web designers to form a subject ring of web sites. To get a better idea of what a web ring is like type "Web Ring" in your favorite search engine.

Tend Your Web Page Like a Garden -- If you take care of your web page, weed out dead and outdated links and regularly add new information, interest in your page will grow.
