:: using fserves

due to the overwhelming popularity of polaris fserves on austnet, i will use this as a basis of this help file, however most fserves work in the same way, so you shouldn't have trouble accessing other fserves using this method.

:: starting out

most fserves on austnet are fitted with an @locator script. this means you can search through all the fserves (only those fitted with the addon) for something specific, without having to go through each and every one. to do this use the format: @locator <whatever> in the channel. for example, if you were looking for some linkin park mp3s, in the channel you may wish to type: @locator linkin park. all those fserves who find any results in the search, will msg you with their results. alternatively, if you were looking for a specific song, such as one step closer, you could use: @locator one step closer. this is a good way of refining your search. remember, if an fserve finds something matching your @locator description, it will msg you. if you don't get any msgs, this means none of the fserves with the @locator addon found any results.

:: downloading stuff

within #warezchamber there are alot of coloured msgs coming up on the screen, these are called fserves, or file servers. for the purpose of this help file, i will refer to my fserve. an fserve msg might look like this:

while this may look confusing, to an experienced user, it is easy to access these and get whatever they want quickly. the main information you need to know is highlighted in the example i have shown. firstly you should check the online number on the fserve. in the example, there is 0 out of 6, which means the fserve allows a maximum of 6 people looking through the fserve at one time, since there are 0 out of that 6, it is okay to access this fserve now. the next thing you need to know is how many sends are going. this fserve allows a maximum of 2 sends at one time, and both of those are taken by other people. if all the send slots are taken, you can still download files, however they will be put into queue, for when there is a free send slot. in this example, 5 out of the 100 queue slots are taken. if you still wish to access this fserve, type one of the triggers. the trigger is what you type in the channel to let the fserve know you wish to access that applicable fserve. for example, typing !mp3songs would take me to the mp3 section of FS|o02's fserve, just as typing `PoRn ViDs would take me to the games section of FS|o02's porn fserve. and so on and so forth.

:: the next step

once you have chosen the fserve you wish to download from, type the trigger of the fserve in the channel. assuming there is a free slot, the fserve will attempt to dcc chat to you, when it does, accept the chat.

once in the dcc chat, a msg similar to that should appear. the commands available are shown in bold. fserves work alot like ms-dos. to display all the files in that fserve, you would type: dir

within fserves, files are shown in lowercase and directories are in upper case. if you wished to see what was within the "DEADSPAWN" directory, you can access it via this command: cd <directory>

as you can see, once you have selected the new directory, to view a list of all the files (and other directories) within that directory, you need to type dir again. assuming there is a file within that directory you wish to download, you can attempt to download it via this command: get <filename>

<FS|o02|> Queuing playboy_home_video_05.mpeg(7.5Mb). It has been placed in queue slot #4, it will send when sends are available.

if all the send slots are free, you will get a msg like this, meaning that the file you wish to download is in queue, and will send when there is a free slot (after all of the queues before you have been sent). by typing sends in the fserve, it will display how many sends are going, and approximately how long they will take to send.

alternatively, you can type queues and it will display how many files are queued up on the fserve. while you're waiting for your queue to come through, you can continue to navigate through the fserve. if you were still in the "DEADSPAWN" directory of the fserve, and wanted to go back to the root directory of the fserve, you would use this command: cd..

this will bring you back to the root directory, from where you can navigate your way through other directories, or attempt to download other files. if you change your mind, and want to cancel the queue you already have and attempt to download another file, the command clr_queues will come in handy.

once this is done, queue up the other file you wish to download. if all the files you wish to download are queued, then you are ready to close the dcc chat since it is not needed anymore. don't worry, closing the dcc chat doesn't mean you won't get your send, it will still send to you so long as you don't leave the channel or you dont quit irc. closing the dcc simply means other downloaders like you can access the fserve while you're waiting for your send.
