Evolution stage 1: Begining of D&D
In 1973 Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, both extream Lord of the Rings fans, decided to create playable adventure based in the same sword swinging, fire hurling time line. Thus, the first edition of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game was born. The concept of roleplaying was completly new to the world, because D&D did not need a board and was only limited by the imagination of those involved.
Evolution stage 2: The gift of the gab
Near the end of the 70's and the coming of the 80's D&D fast became a cult favorite. Since almost anyone could play it, it was played by all ages. Dormintries had late playing sessions and kids had sleepovers. No party was complete without a spot of roleplaying. Gary and Dave started the company TSR and that's when D&D really started to evolve. from videogames to action figures, even its own morning cartoon show! Many spinoff roleplaying game came into being aswell, and not only by TSR.
Evolution stage 3: A fall from grace
Now this is where it all started to go wrong, because a game is not a game at the cost of a life. A movie based in the D&D world called 'Mazes and Monsters' was released and this movie really exposed some 'evils' to the religeous comunitee. Then the bad stuff started. There were rumors about people who got way into their character and killed someone, and about the guy who commited suicide when his character died. But there were real deaths but i'm not about to mention them in case some nutcase decides to repeat history. Comitees were formed against D&D and it slowly but surly died down.
Evolution stage 4: Death of the Dragon
The D&D craze had begun to simmer down as harsh reality began to take more and more color from fantasy. TSR sold off D&D to Wizards of the Coast who in turn sold off to Hasbro. From video games to big time movies, Dungeons & Dragons is still around in the lives of many Game keepers, Wizards, Thieves and Knights throughout the world. Many companys have tried to match the fun and tension of D&D but few have succeded, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is one of these few.
