Making Ribs |
After cutting the 2-1/4 wide stock, it is planed and sanded to 5/16 thickness. Then you cut to length all of the 45 full-length ribs (with enough spares for potential breakage and an extra four cant ribs) Once these are complete, you use a taper jig and cut a 14" taper on each end of the rib. The taper creates an illusion that the rib is straight, in the boat, although it is actually at an angle. This becomes more apparent at the ends of the canoe. |
Then......you have to hand-plane the taper, so it blends into the rest of the rib. This whole process takes some time! |
