An overview of BTEC 'Aviation Studies'

The Syllabus

All cadets are encouraged to follow the standard ATC syllabus.  This consists of the First Class, Leading, Senior, Staff Part1 and Staff Part2 classifications.  Different activities are available to cadets depending on their classification and this is one of the main reasons for progression through the syllabus.  All cadets must pass the First Class training in order to take part in virtually any activity although certain exceptions apply.

BTEC Subjects

The subjects required for the BTEC are contained in the Leading, Senior and Staff Part 1 classifications which cadets will usually be taking as part of their training:-

Leading (all 3 subjects) Basic Navigation
Principles of Flight
Airmanship II

Senior (any 2 subjects) Air Navigation
Propulsion
Aircraft Handling
Advanced Radio & Radar
Pilot Navigation
Airframes
Operational Flying
Satellite Communications

Staff Part 1 (any 2 subjects not studied at Senior)

Examinations

Examinations are held in No 3 Welsh Wing on three occasions a year, normally at the end of March, May and November.  The examinations take the form of multiple choice questions and a minimum of 13 correct out of 25 is required to pass.  In addition to the above technical subjects, practical training must also be undertaken to qualify for any of the classifications.  A minimum of 30 hours must be spent studying at each level in order to qualify for the BTEC and this normally results in one classification being studied per year.

The BTEC Qualification

The BTEC qualification can be studied in three parts spread over the time taken to pass all three classifications (Leading, Senior, Staff Pt1).  Cadets can register passes as they are gained and receive a Unit Success Certificate at each classification level, or, apply for the full award after completing their studies.  Most cadets favour registering their successes as they achieve them so that the cost of the qualification is spread over a period of time.

Costs (As these may vary confirmation can be got from 3WW Wing HQ by E-mailing whq_3welsh@lineone.net

The cost of the BTEC qualification will vary as the administering body, Edexcel, will set these charges annually.  The cost for the period September 2001 to August 2002 is as follows;

Registration of Unit Successes (If registered separately) £12 each totalling £36
Full Award if registered on completion £27.50 (saving £8.50)

There is no charge for this qualification from No 3 Welsh Wing as all requirements are covered under the standard syllabus training being undertaken by all the cadets.  Charges are only levied by Edexcel to cover administration.

If you are a cadet and are interested in registering for the BTEC Aviation Studies qualification, then speak to your Squadron Training Officer Flg. Off J.Gardner or Squadron Commander, Flt. Lt. T.P.Gardner, M.B.E.
