Where is the worst place on Earth to stare at another man's women? Jacksonville, North Carolina, where 50,000 marines and one girl host the Camp Lejeune tournament. After meeting at 4:00am in the morning a lean Charleston Hurricane squad made the 4 hour trip to Lejeune.
"I knew with the number of players, we were going to need to mesh, and we were going to need to run," says Coach Chris Thornhill.
In the first game, Charleston was matched against North Carolina State. The Wolfpack had good numbers and good legs.
" Ohh, I know about college teams..." says midfield star Rob DeMoura. "Running is the way to get it done."
With solid defense and good ball control, the Hurricanes cruised by the Wolfpack. The next game would prove more challenging for the Canes. Having traveled 13 hours the Buffalo team was in no mood to lose. Fatigue was beginning to set in and the Hurricanes with only two subs fought to the very end to pull off a 7-6 victory; making the Canes the team to beat on the final day.
On Sunday the undefeated Hurricanes matched up against the undefeated East Carolina Pirates. The pirates with a deep bench and young legs would prove too tough for the battle weary Canes.
"We just couldn't get it going...I don't think we were too tired; there were just too many of them," says veteran midfielder John Yancone.
The Hurricanes finished the tournament 2-1, the third place team.
HONORS: Matt Graham: Matt Graham played the entire field and contributed greatly to the Canes success. Coach Thornhill gave the tournament MVP to Mr. Graham. Special thanks to: Mike and Swamp Thing who's contributions to the team filled a much needed gap in the Canes roster. |
