Naming
For most of the populace, naming is a simple procedure. Children are simply given a name. In the Royal family, however, things were different. At birth, the baby is given a name just like a normal child, but the child is also given a constellation name which the child is thought to have an aptitude. For Simus, this was Reticulum, but for his sister, Veanna, it was Sagitta, the Arrow. Royals were known by their constellation names rather than given names, so the king was not known as King Derak, but as King Corvus. Those who marry into the Royal family are also given Constellation names, as Aliera, Simus's mother, was. Aliera's maiden name, Phaet, means "Dove," so she received "Columba" and was henceforth called Queen Columba. Entering into the Royal family is the only instance in which a person's last name changes.
Last names for the general populace come from individual star names. Sons inherit the last name of their father and daughters of their mother. The last name of the Royal family, however, is d'Sidra, which is special, since anyone entering the Royal family adopts this as his or her last name.
