Title: A Game of Thrones Book One of A Song of Ice and Fire

Author: George R.R. Martin

Summary: In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Review: A plot that's as complicated yet intriguing as the characters that envelops A Game of Thrones. It is not just about Good versus Evil anymore. The story is more than simple. Each characters has his or her own struggles, either to achieve ambitious goals or the mere concept of survival. In the center of all the intrigues are the Starks of Winterfell. Hard, ungiving, and firm are fused within their family blood. They've known nothing but surviving the winter that lasts beyond the season. Eddard Stark, a man of iron words, is the ruler of Winterfell. When Robert the King, Eddard's long time friend, summons him to be the Hand, a high position next to the king, he obeys. The old Hand before was mysteriously killed and no one knows the truth. Wanting to discover the truth, Eddard took his position and investigates the matter, not knowing that the truth he's seeking may cause him his life. Through it all, his whole family may experiences the wrath of the outcome.

The story has great character developments. George R.R. Martin makes his characters very believable and realistic. Each one has his or her own distinguishable personality. When I started reading the book only a few pages, I got so caught up on finding out what's going to be on the next page and the next and so on that I refused to put the book down. The book is very captivating and relentless in holding the readers every inch of the way. One of my favorite characters in the book is Jon Snow, a bastard son of Eddard Stark. He's very unique in terms of honor, self-sacrifice, courage and best of all he has a dire wolf that is as white as the snow. Together they embark on the Night's Watch, a group of dedicated men who serves to protect the realm from the evil that lies afar beyond the Great Wall of the realm. They hold no alliance with anyone nor will they fight anyone for their only concern is the defense of the Great Wall. A superb fantasy fiction definitely worth reading.
