Speech Given by Mrs Cecilia Wee for the Special Dinner with the Singapore High Commissioner on the 22nd of October 2001 At the Red Castle Hotel
Your
Excellency, Mr Ashok Mirpuri, Col. Richard Chua, Members of the WASBC and
guests, Good
Evening and A Warm Welcome to the Red Castle Hotel. It
is my privilege this evening to welcome Your Excellency, Mr Ashok Mirpuri and
Col. Richard Chua to this WASBC Welcome Dinner.
His Excellency had expressed his desire to meet with both Singaporeans
and ex-Singaporeans and what better way than to introduce him to the WASBC. The
WASBC has been a long stayer in Western Australia and We are proud to have
hosted annually the Singapore National Day Dinner and Dance which has always
been a tremendous success and also gave us all a chance to get together. This
year's was no exception. We were honoured to have
the attendance of the Premiere of Western Australia, Dr Geoff Gallop and
his wife, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Party, Mr Dan Sullivan, National
Director of the One Nation Party, Mr John Fisher and his top executives along
with our fellow Singaporeans and ex-Singaporeans who joined us in celebrating
Singapore's 36th Birthday and National Day. We
have a large population of Singaporeans in Western Australia. Our student
population alone is in access of 2700 some of whom may be the future leaders of
Singapore. Over 100 Republic of Singapore Air Force personnel along with
countless Singaporean Investors and their families call Western Australia their
second home. Canberra is a 4 hour trip by plane from Perth and also 2 hours
ahead in local timezones. And
most importantly, with Western Australia being one of the closest Australian
destinations to Singapore, Your Excellency could, through Your Excellency's
considerable influence, perhaps motion the possibility of establishing a
Consulate in Perth or even an Honorary Concul to assist in bridging the gap
between Canberra and Western Australia. There
are more than 30 Consulates and Hon Consuls in Perth from all over the world and
it would be an excellent move to have our own Consulate in Western Australia. We
ask that Your Excellency will put forward our request and we will look forward
to a favourable arrangement in the near future. We
THANK Your Excellency for your presence here tonight and we hope that Your
Excellency will be able to brief us on the path Singapore is going to take in
these turmoil times. |
