Double Wedding Observed in Washburn Pentecostal Church


Beautiful Nuptial Service for Miss Ona Ballard and Vincent Allen, and Miss Marguerite Allen and Gerald Flewelling

WASHBURN, Aug. 27 [1940] -- In a very attractive double wedding ceremony at Pentecostal church. Thursday evening, Miss Ona Ballard, daughter of Mrs. Fern Ballard, and Vincent Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Allen. Double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Lester Goodwin.

The other principals in this wedding, Miss Marguerite Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murray and Gerald Flewelling, son of Rev. and Mrs. Fred Flewelling. Double ring ceremony was performed by the father of the groom. Rev. Flewelling of Goodwin Mills, Maine.

The processional from Lohengrin and the recessional from Mendelssohn was played by Mrs. Beulah Cook of Augusta. During the ceremony a vocal "Perfect Day," was rendered by Helen Valley and vocal solo, "O Promise Me," by William Flewelling. The bridal party stood under sweetheart arch decorated with evergreen and white flowers. Baskets of flowers decorated the church and there were white tapers in the windows.

The brides were attired in white satin, princess style, with full length veils of silk illusion, caught to a coronet of seed pearls and blossoms. Each carried a white Bible from which fell white streamers caught with white rosebuds, white sweet peas and bride's bouquet.

Miss Ballard was given away by her uncle, Arnold Ballard, and Miss Allen by her father, Murray Allen.

The bride's maids were Miss Anna, Flewelling, of Goodwin's Mills; Margaret Dickinson, Miss Glenna Sperrey and Miss Marion Curtis of Washburn. Miss Dickinson and Miss Flewelling wore pink chiffon trimmed in blue, with shoulder length veils caught with flowers. Each carried a colonial bouquet. Miss Sperrey and Miss Curtis wore gowns of baby blue chiffon, trimmed with rose, and matching shoulder length veil caught with flowers. They also carried colonial bouquets.

The ushers were Arthur Griffin, Murray Allen, Jr., William Flewelling and Leo Flewelling of Washburn.

The little flower girls were June Allen and Beverly Thompson. They were dressed in long blue gowns of rose taffeta and carried white bride's bouquet.

The ring bearers were Carol Dickinson and Wayne Nickerson. Each carried white satin sweetheart pillows, trimmed with Lily of the Valley and white ribbons.

The train bearers were Evelyn Allen and Adina Churchill. They wore long gowns of daffodil yellow taffeta and each wore a coronet of flowers in their hair.

Mrs. Allen wore black Alpaca with black and white accessories. She complemented her gown with a corsage of mixed sweet peas. Mrs. Ballard wore black alpaca with black and white and also complement her gown with corsage of sweet peas. Mrs. Flewelling wore navy blue crepe with navy and white accessories complementing her gown also with a corsage of sweet peas.

Mrs. Lavina Allen, Mrs. Evie Flewelling and Mrs. Wilmot Crouse, grandmothers of the bridal group wore black crepe with black and white accessories. They complemented their gowns with corsages of orchid colored sweet peas.

Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Allen residence. A beautiful bridal cake was made by Mr. Willis Stearns of Augusta. Miss Marion Munson and Miss Avis Fox presided at the gift tables. They were attired in yellow and green chiffon respectively.

The couples left immediately on their wedding trip.

Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Allen will reside in Natick, Mass., where Mr. Allen has employment. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Flewelling will reside in Crouseville where Mr. Flewelling is employed.

Mrs. Allen is a graduate of Washburn high school and attended Maine General hospital, Portland.

Mr. Allen is a graduate of Washburn high school and has recently been employed in Natick, Mass.

Mrs. Flewelling was a graduate of Washburn high school and attended Bible Institute, Providence, R. I. Mr. Flewelling, also a graduate of Washburn high, attended New England school of Theology in Boston.
