McCall-Umphrey Wedding at Washburn Saturday

Attractive Wedding at Home of Bride in Washburn

WASHBURN Dec. 1 [1939]--Miss Ardis Marie Umphrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Umphrey of Washburn, became the the bride of John Carl McCall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron McCall of Sweetwater, Texas, in an attractive ceremony at the Umphrey home on Wilder Street at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. E. Milton Grant, pastor of the Congregational Church of Presque Isle, read the single ring ceremony. The home was decorated with white pom-poms and bronze and yellow chrysanthemums. Miss Barbra Blackstone played the bridal chorus from Lohengrin.

Given in marriage by her father, Harry E. Umphrey, the bride was beautifully gowned in white slipper satin cut on princess lines, with bouffant skirt, rose point lace inserts and collar. She wore a fingertip tulle veil with halo cap and carried a bouquet of white orchids, bouvardia and sweet peas. Miss Phyllis Umphrey, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore a charming gown of periwinkle blue chiffon with beaded bodice, bouffant skirt, and a flower halo. Two former classmates of the bride, Miss Jeanette A. Burnham of Portland, and Miss Mary E. O'Brie of Middleton, Conn., were bridesmaids. They were attractively gowned in yellow chiffon with draped bodices, bouffant skirts, and flower halos. Their colonial bouquets were of white bouvardia, light; blue delphiniums, and bachelor's buttons.

Mrs, Harry E. Umphrey, mother of the bride, was dressed in gold colored draped chiffon with a velvet jacket trimmed with sequins. Her corsage was of sweet heart roses.

The best man was Harry Horne of Sweetwater, Texas. Donald Umphrey of Washburn. Franklin Washburn of Presque Isle, and Edmund Rollins of Durham, N. H., were ushers. Shortly after the wedding ceremony a reception took place at the Northeastland hotel at Presque Isle. The affair was held in a setting of yellow and white pom-poms, roses and mixed oflwerfi, while the bride's table had an attractive floral centerpiece. Mrs. Donald Umphrey was in charge of the guest book and Mrs. W. P. Worth presided over the gift table. Piano music was provided by Miss Barbara, Blackstone. Assisting the bridal party in receiving were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Umphrey, parents of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. McCall left by motor Saturday afternoon on a wedding trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. The bride, traveled in a blue wool dress and wore a mink trimmed black coat, and hat. Mr. and Mrs. McCall will be at home to friends after Dec. 7 on Third Street, Presque Isle. The bride was graduated from Washburn High school and attended Oak Grove seminary. Sloneleigh college, and Westbrook Junior college.

Mr. McCall was graduated from Sweetwater High school and from Texas A. and M. college. He is a member of the Sweetwater Rotary Club and is employed by the International Harvester company at Presque Isle. The out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. David Fisher of Walpole, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. James Utterback of Bangor.
