Mr. Churchill was born February 20, 1857 the eldest of fourteen children. His father, Job Churchill was one of the earliest settlers of Washburn. His mother, Ann Crouse Churchill was born in Maysville. The brothers and sisters who survive Mr. Churchill are Marshall E. and Samuel J. Churchill in Oregon; Frank Churchill in New Hampshire; Miles G. Churchill in Peabody, Mass.; Mrs. Stedman Crouse in Boston: Mrs. Mary Buck and Mrs. Henry Beardsley in Presque Isle.
Mr. Churchill was married three times. His first wife was Lizzie Dyer Churchill. Of this union there were five children all of whom are living, namely Lewis of Presque Isle, Harry and Colby of Caribou, Guy and a daughter, Mrs. George Russell of Washburn.
After the death of his first wife, he married Edna Tuttle who lived only a few years. He later married Adeline Bugbee who is left to mourn his loss. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Herman Walker of Washburn besides several grandchildren.
Mr. Churchill has been a life-long resident of Washburn and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and relatives. His genial nature and friendly neighborlyness as well as his strong Christian character are true marks of a noble and good man.
He was a charter member of Industry Lodge, No. 112, I.O.O.F. and one of the oldest members of the Masonic Lodge. He had been selectman and road commissioner and always took an active part in town affairs.
He was a member of the Advent Christian church in Crouseville.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Baptist church, Rev. A. W. Brooks of Crouseville officiating. Rev. E. R. Farrar, pastor of the Baptist church offered prayer. The Masonic Lodge attended in a body and conducted committal services. The bearers were Arthur Umphrey, George Umphrey, Owen Story, John Story, Robert Foote and Clarence White.
Rev. Mrs. Harold Bickford of Mars Hill, Mrs. Eddie Valley and C. E. Knox with Miss Bessie Duncan, pianist sang three selections, I'll Meet You Just Inside the Eastern Gate; Face to Face and Angels Get My Mansion Ready.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy J. Durepo of Presque Isle were in charge of funeral arrangements. The floral tributes were beautiful and showed the esteem in which the deceased was held in the community.
The burial was at the Crouseville cemetery.
Out of town people at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stetson and daughter, Eula, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Burgess, Mrs. Earl Bailey of Caribou, Mrs. Elnora Russell and son Elroy of Woodland, Harry Philander of Van Buren, John Willard and Harry Green of Presque Isle, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Bugbee and Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Bugbee of Dexter.
