Presque Isle Girl Engaged to Wed Waterville Man

Nannabelle Gray Betrothed to Ensign William C. Carter

PRESQUE ISLE, July 17 [1941] -- Mrs. Granville C. Gray announced the engagement of her daughter, Nannabelle, to Ensign William Caswell Carter, son of the late Professor Benjamin E. and Mary Caswell Carter, of Waterville, at a party held at the Gray residence recently. A white floral centerpiece with a miniature bride and bridegroom, together with white tapers and handpainted place cards decorated the table.

The guests included the Misses Phyllis Clark, Pauline Allen, Martha Watt, Beth Trundy, Constance Hallett, Margaret Graves, Marg Boone DeLong, Barbara Kilpatrick Jameson, Clare Donahue, Margery Hilt, Dana Dingwall, and Marian Marino, of Presque Isle: Esther McBride of Easton, and Jane Fernald Boyd of Chelmsford, Mass., and the guest of honor, Miss Gray.

Mr. Carter, who is now stationed in Chicago, is engaged in meteorological work. He was graduated from Colby college in 1938. He was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity and of Phi Beta Kappa. His major study was mathematics.

After graduating, he studied one year at Oxford university as a Rhodes scholar, and for the past three years has been doing graduate work at the University of Chicago.

Miss Gray graduated from Colby college in 1940, majoring in geology and biology. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, was listed in "Who's Who Among American College end University Students", and was president of Cap and Gown, senior women's honorary society. For the last two years, she has taught in the high schools of Southwest Harbor and Washburn.
