Also aboard the Gripsholm are 665 United States civilians and 78 Canadian military personnel. The Swedish ship is due to arrive in the United States next week.
All the soldiers are sick or wounded, and were exchanged in Switzerland for German prisoners of war.
The War department said that leave or furloughs will be provided for those physically capable of taking advantage of the opportunity. There will be continued hospital treatment for those requiring it.
Pay accounts of the soldiers and officers also will be settled in full, necessary clothing will be issued and awards and decorations will be made to those who have been designated to receive them.
Next of kin of the officers and men included in the exchange have been notified by the War department.
The Maine soldiers returning are Pfc. Paul C. Shaver; Infantry, Mrs. Callie R. Shaver, wife, Fort Point road; Stockton Springs.
Sergt. Frank W. Sherwood, infantry, Theresa A. Sherwood, wife, 62 Lawrence street. Portland.
Sgt. Sherwood, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Sherwood of Presque Isle and Bangor, was graduated from Presque Isle high school and worked for the Bartlett Tree company of New York and Connecticut. He was captured by the Germans in Italy. He has two brothers and a sister in the Army -- Cpls. Lowell and Earl Sherwood, serving respectively in the South Pacific and Lakewood, Fla., and Pvt. Hope Sherwood, WAC, Des Moines, Iowa.
Pfc, Shaver, 25, whose wife and baby daughter live in Stockton Springs, is the son of the Rev. and, Mrs. L. C. Shaver of Gettysburg, Ohio.
