Washburn Man Honored In Italy

15th AAF IN ITALY -- Norman D. Wilcox, Jr., of Washburn, has been promoted to the commissioned officer rank of Staff Seargeant. He is a radio mechanic in the oldest heavy hombardment group in the Mediterranean Theater of operations.

Sgt. Wilcox enlisteld in the Army on November 9, 1942, and attended raidio schools at Scott Field, Ill., and Boca Raton, Fla., before coming overseas.

He is a member of an AAF Flying Fortress Group in the 15th Air Force that has flown on over 350 combat missions, bombing enemy installations in almost every Axis-dominated country in Europe from bases in England, North Africa, Russia and Italy.

Sgt. Wilcox has been awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon and wears the European-African-Middle East Campaign Ribbon with two battle Participation stars.
