A pleasant informal evening was enjoyed with singing of Scotch songs and other songs of the day, led by the son, Harry. A poem written in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, by a friend, was read by a granddaughter, Doris Umphrey, also a Scotch reading was given by Mrs. Mary Chapman, sister of Mr. Duncan. An account of golden wedding ten years ago carefully treasured in a book with other mementos of the occasion was read and passed around.
During the evening an unexpected and pleasing surprise occurred when Kenneth Grant arrived and presented the couple with a charmingly arranged basket of rose carnations and gladioli, a tribute from Industry lodge I. O. O. F. Mr. Duncan was secretary of the lodge for over 50 years and is the only living charter member.
Two beautiful wedding cakes, one a gift of Mrs. Mary Chapman and family made especially for the occasion by Mrs. Lungren of New Sweden and the other by a daughter, Mrs. Malcolm Umphrey, decorated the dining table among gifts of flowers.
In the evening refreshments were served and the traditional first piece of one of the wedding cakes was cut by Mr. and Mrs. Duncan.
It might be fitting to add a bit of history concerning Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, but their long life of over 60 years in the community, their active part in church fraternal organizations and other social life is known to their many friends.
Since retiring from his last active work as Washburn's postmaster at the age of 76, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have been living quietly at their home. They have six children all of whom are living, Mrs. Ernest Umphrey, Mrs. Malcolm Umphrey, Bessie and Harry of Washburn, David of Presque Isle and Mrs. Anna Hopper of Seattle, Wash. They also have 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Out of town relatives present for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. James Cumming, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Cumming, Mrs. Burfield Langley Mrs. Ed Milbury, Mr. and Mrs. Anson Cumming and four children all of Easton, Mr. and Mrs. David Duncan, Jr., and children Sandra and Roger and Anna Chapman of Presque Isle.
