
THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION CLERGYMEN -- Rev. Philip C. Hughey (seated), minister of the United Baptist church in Presque Isle and his son, Rev. Philip C. Hughey, Jr., of the First Baptist church, Washburn, come from a long line of ministers.
His great-grandfather was Rev. William Russell Pettengell of Leeds, Maine. From this family have come a large number of ministers and missionaries. Those in the ministerial line include Rev. W. T. Pettengell of Waukshau, Wisconsin; whose son is a missionary in India.
Rev. G. G. Kincade and Rev. A. Walsh married daughters of Rev. R. Pettengell. Mr. Walsh was a pastor and evangelist who traveled over a large part of the nation during his ministry. His daughter married Rev. Philip C. Hughey, who is now pastor of the United Baptist church in Presque Isle and father of the Washburn minister. Mr. Hughey's sister was a missionary in Ecuador for a number of years.
Rev. Philip C. Hughey, Jr., was educated in the Maine, Massachusetts and New York schools. He attended Wheaton College in Illinois and the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, receiving his A .B. and Th. B. degrees.
Before coming to his present pastorate, he served as assistant pastor of the Wadsworth Avenue Baptist church, New York City, and pastor of Bethany Baptist church, Camden, N. J, He was ordained to the gospel ministry on March 14 of this year by a council of churches in New Jersey.
Mr. and Mrs. Hughey have two children -- the son being named Philip C. Hughey III.
