Ruth Pooler And Hanford Duncan Wed In Washburn

WASHBURN, July 23 [1950] -- A recent candlelight wedding took place at the First Baptist Church here when Miss Ruth Nioma Pooler, daughter of Mrs. Joseph Pooler and the late Mr. Pooler, became the bride of Hanford P. Duncan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Duncan, Sr.

Tall baskets of white peonies, gladioli and spirea, arranged by Mrs. Harold Umphrey and candelabra decorated the altar for the ceremony which was performed by the Rev, Philip C, Hughey, Jr, He read the double-ring service in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives.

Incidental music and the wedding marches were played by Mrs. Wilmot Churchill, church organist and she accompanied the soloist, Miss Gloria Plissey, who sang "My Hero" and "Because."

The bride, given in marriage by her brother, Eugene Pooler, was lovely in a gown of white marquisette over taffeta en train with fitted bodice, round neckline and lace bertha, bouffant peplum of lace and long tapering sleeves. Her finger-tip veil of flowered marquisette fell from a cloche of lace. Her only ornament was a string of pearls. She carried a colonial bouquet of white carnations and baby's breath tied with a side bow of white satin.

As maid of honor the bride chose Miss Dorothy Sewell, who wore a gown of blue crepe fashioned with a tucked collar, off the shoulder, and full skirt with tucked side peplums. She wore a headband entwined with pink carnations. She carried a colonial bouquet of pink carnations and baby's breath tied with narrow pink ribbon.

The bridesmaids were Miss Lois Learnard and Miss Dathlene Paterson, who wore similar gowns

of pink taffeta with full tiered skirts and fitted bodices and square necklines. Their headbands were entwined with pink and yellow carnations. They carried colonial bouquets of pink and yellow carnations tied with the pink and yellow, ribbons.

FLOWER GIRL

Bonnie Pooler, niece of the bride, was flower girl and wore a long dress of yellow net over taffeta with a blue sash. Her headdress was fashioned like those of the bridesmaids.

Kenneth Duncan, Jr., brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Ushers were Lloyd Duncan and Dwight Sewell.

The bride's mother, Mrs. Pooler, wore a dress of black crepe with white accessories and her corsage was of red roses. Mrs. Duncan, mother of the bridegroom, was attired in a navy blue crepe dress with white accessories and a corsage of red roses complemented her attire.

Following the wedding, a reception was held in the church dining room. Evergreen banked the wall before which the bridal couple received with their attendants and the mothers of the couple.

The bride's cake, made by Mrs. Uno Espling of New Sweden, had a top layer of fruit cake which will be served on the first wedding anniversary of the couple. The cake was served by Mrs. Glen Wilcox, sister of the bride. Assisting in serving were Mrs. Myrtle Smith, Mrs. Perley Howard, Mrs. Mina Carmen and Mrs. Tom Sewell. Miss Glennis Nickerson, Miss Marie Wilcox and Miss Lois Pooler, nieces of the bride, served ice cream. In charge of the guest book was Miss Catherine Duncan, sister of the bridegroom. Miss Anita Dahlgren and Mrs. Bernard Pooler presided at the gift table.

For traveling. the bride wore a light blue suit with white accessories. The couple went to Niagara Falls, N. Y., on their wedding trip. They will reside in their new home the latter part of the summer.

Mrs. Duncan is a graduate of Washburn high school and Washington State Normal school in Machias. She has been a teacher in the local school since being graduated. Mr. Duncan was graduated from Washburn high school and served a year in the Army Air corps.
