Appleby-Haskell Wedding Rites Held In Washburn

WASHBURN, Sept. 17 [1958] -- In a church setting of white gladioli and candelabra, Miss Virginia Belle Haskell, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Francis W. Haskell, of Washburn, became the bride of Richard Appleby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris B. Appleby of 154 Allen Avenue, Portland, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The double ring ceremony was solemnized by the Rev. George Budd in the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church, here.

Traditional wedding music was played by Mrs. Jack Stoddard who also accompanied Mrs. Robert Brown as she sang "O Promise Me" and "The Lord's Prayer."

Escorted by her father, the bride was attired in a floor length gown of white slipper satin, fashioned with a yoke of rosebud lace, fitted bodice, and long pointed sleeves. Tiny, satin-covered buttons trimmed the sleeves and a satin cord bound the empire waistline forming a bow in the back from which fell a large pleat.

Her fingertip veil of French illusion was attached to a crown studded with seed pearls and sequins. She carried a white Bible centered with glamelias tied with white satin streamers.

Miss Diane Haskell was her sister's maid of honor. She wore a gown of orchid net with matching headband and white mitts and carried a round bouquet of orchid carnations and asters intermingled with orchid net.

Allen C. Appleby, the bridegroom's brother, was best man. Ushers were Fred Murphy of Houlton and Fred Graham of Caribou, both cousins of the bridegroom.

The bride's mother wore a black lace dress over orchid taffeta with orchid accessories and a corsage of orchid gladioli.

The bridegroom's mother wore a gown and gold rayon print with beige and brown acccssories. Her corsage was yellow gladioli.

Mixed bouquets of glads decorated the church dining room where the reception was held. Mrs. Marilyn McKay circulated the guest book and Mrs. Betty Umphrey of Washburn and Mrs. Olla Treffry of Presque Isle were at the gift table.

Peggy Brewer dipped punch which was made by Adeline Plissey. Bonnlynn Treffrey was at the refreshment table and Catherine Palmer cut the wedding cake after the first slice was cut by the bridal couple. Members of the WSCS were in charge.

The bride's traveling ensemble was a green wool dress with brown accessories and white glalmelia corsage.

The couple planned to spend several days at Portage Lake before being at home, September 20, to friends in Portland.

The bride has been graduated from Washburn High School, class of 1955, and from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. She is a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

The bridegroom was a graduate from Deering High School in Portland and attended Becker Junior College, Worcester, Mass. He has received an honorable discharge from the Armed Forces and plans to attend the University of Connecticut.
