Forbes said the turn out for the three day celebration was "really wonderful." Crowds were estimated at 10,000 he said.
Winners in Saturday's parade included: overall best, Coles Express wif three entries; best float first, Tater State: second, Jaycees; third, Merle Wilcox, a special award was given to a team of oxen pulling the Centennial Wagon; The oxen were owned by Charles "Dick" Hall of Westfield, and sponsored by Washburn Trust and Easler's Hardware.
Awards for the outstanding band went to the St. Quentin, N. B., marching band; the New Sweden band and the Fort Fairfield High School band. Cole's Express took first in the draft horse class and Putnam Brothers took second place.
Following the parade the crowds swarmed to the horse show ring where ponies and horses were put through their paces. Miss Sharon Sponberg, Miss Washburn Centennial, awarded the ribbons to the various winners.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce prepared more than 1,000 barbecue chickens in pits located at the horse show ring and at the high school. All the chicken was consumed, Forbes said.
Following the barbecue, a square dance was held at the high school, conducted by the Spud Shufflers Square Dance Group of Presque Isle. Approximately 300 participated in the dances.
