Richardson appointed to Washburn post

WASHBURN -- Sheldon G. Richardson, a native of Washburn, has been appointed town manager of the Town of Washburn.

Born at Castle Hill he was educated in the public schools of Washburn: received a B. S. Degree from the University of Maine, Presque Isle and has done graduate work at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., and the University of Maine, Orono.

He has held many civic and community offices and is now president of the Washburn Rotary Club, member of Washburn Lodge No. 193 A.F. & A.M.; past president of Washburn Teachers Association, past president of the Washburn Alumni Association; member of Washburn Teachers Association, National Education Associativn and the Maine Teachers Association.

A member of the Washburn Town Council and chairman, Community Council Boy Scouts of America; past president of Washburn Dollars For Scholars: named one of the outstanding Young Men of America in 1970 by the Outstanding American Foundation.

In 1967 he was awarded the Ford Foundation leadership development program fellowship to do graduate work and during that time traveled throughout most of the United States visiting educational and federally funded projects ranging from schools to the Tennessee Valley Authority.

During the fellowship year he also worked as an administrative intern at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Lyon Falls, N. Y.

For the past nine years he has been a teacher of Mathematics and English in the public schools of Washburn and director of adult education for School Administrative District No. 45 for two years.

He is married to thc former Penny Humphrey of Washburn and he has four children.

Richardson will complete his teaching position in June before becoming active as town manager. Town Manager Milford Blackstone will be active in town affairs until replaced by Richardson.
