Natalie Imbruglia
Returns To The Music Scene You’ve probably heard her popular hit “Torn” on the radio. Natalie Imbruglia (say: Im-broo-lee-ah) returns to the music scene early this spring; her second full-length CD since “Left of the Middle” (1998) is making its debut on March 5th. “White Lilies Island,” featuring the love-ballad “Wrong Impression.” While the music video of the latter single leaves something to be desired in terms of creativity and filming, Imbruglia’s music is soulful and often appealing to audiences of today. Like other pop stars of this generation, Imbruglia uses the universal topics of love and heartbreak in many of her songs. “Wrong Impression” is definitely upbeat, while her ‘darker’ songs, namely “Goodbye,” “Talk In Tongues” and “Butterflies.” Their slower tempos tend to detract from the poppy audience that originally heard and loved Imbruglia’s “Torn” and “Wrong Impression.” Imbruglia, originally an Aussie soap opera star, quit her job as an actress on the hit show Neighbours and consequently went to London. There, she met her future manager, Anne Barrett. Along with the help of several top producers of the time, namely former Cure member Phil Thornalley, Nigel Godrich (Radiohead’s OK Computer), and Mark Goldenberg (who wrote the Eel’s hit “Novocaine For The Soul”). In addition to these connections, Imbruglia’s naturally good looks and Aussie accent landed her ina contract with top recording company RCA, with whom she’s produced her second full length CD, due to come out March 5th. The single “Wrong Impression” is, surprisingly, not the first track; rather, the first track is a driving, emotional song- “That Day.” The acoustic and enjoyable “Satellite” takes a different perspective on the conventional love song, while ‘Butterflies’ is about “that sinking, glass-half-empty feeling, where you know things aren’t working out, but there’s no turning back,” Imbruglia says. Her “deceptive gentleness” weaves its way into the other songs, namely “Do You Love?” “Hurricane,” and “Beauty on the Fire.” Natalie’s “Sunlight” is inspiring and upbeat, while offering an almost sci-fi view of the world. All in all, her CD looks to be a success thus far, despite people’s beliefs about actors-turned-singers, including Imbruglia’s former cast-mate, Kylie Minogue (let’s just say Minogue isn’t as good as Imbruglia). Be sure to listen to her music on her official site, http://www.natalie-imbruglia.co.uk/, and listen to the entire White Lilies Island CD when it comes out in March!
