Paraphrasing Practice #1

Many times when you are writing, you will want to use other people’s ideas. You have 2 choices for doing this. You can use their exact words and use quotation marks around them or you can paraphrase and use your own words.

The problem with using quotes all the time is that your writing will look choppy and disconnected. It is fine to use a few quotes throughout an essay, but these should be used only when it is important to say exactly what another person says, or if the original words are so powerful that they add to the message.

If you are using other people’s ideas, but are not using quotes, it is important that you completely rewrite their ideas into your own words. To do this, you need to change both the word order and the exact words that the writer uses. This assignment will help you think about changing words that the original writer or speaker uses.

Directions: You should either print out this page or write the questions and answers in your notebook. You should be ready to share your answers with other students in class. Make sure to leave room for additional answers that other students have found.

Do not use a dictionary or a word list to complete this assignment. Try to answer each question using what you already know.
