Keys are devices that "drain" power from the Jurai trees. The Juraian Royal Family all have keys. The Juraian Trees give keys to the noble whom they consider to be a "partner". Keys are formed from the sap and bark of the tree.
Since Tenchiken is the key to a First Generation Ship (in this case, Funaho), it is called a Master Key. There are 5 first generation ships, and therefore, there are five Master Keys. A Master Key can control any First Generation Ship and any second, third, or fourth generation ship.
Nobles are never far from their keys, even when sleeping.
Aeka's Second Generation key is her tiara. Sasami's Master Key is a small handheld remote.
